From radio station to network

Éxitos 1090 AM was founded in 1969 in Caracas and ended up being the seed of something bigger. At the end of the seventies it reinvented itself with new schemes of music, shows and promotions, and at the start of the eighties a group of regional broadcasters joined it: Radio Reloj in Zulia, Radio Melodía in Barquisimeto, Radio Latina in Valencia and others from the center of the country. Out of that sum the Circuito Unión Radio was born.

The network went on making history: in 1988 it put Éxitos 107.3 on the air, the first commercial FM station in Venezuela —the newborn La Mega, where the dance mixshows this Archive documents ended up—, and in 1996 it was the first in the country to broadcast its programming live via satellite.

Why it is in this Archive

Because it was in its booth that Waldemaro Martínez started, in 1980 and at seventeen: the voice that would later put the name of countless minitecas into jingles, promotions and presentations. His entry in Voices That Left a Mark documents that way in through Éxitos 1090 and his later move to the founding of La Mega in 1988.

Radio promotion was a silent piece of the movement: the minitecas needed their name to sound between one song and the next, and stations like this one were the vehicle.
