The genre that was born inside a miniteca and now fills dancefloors across Europe

It is not a metaphor: the genre known as changa tuki was literally born inside a miniteca, in the hillside barrios of Caracas, and its founding parties used the same format and the same vocabulary —matinées, miniteca wars— this Archive documents. Thirty years later, a documentary tells that story.

Merengue house: the merengue New York turned into techno

In the late 80s, in Manhattan's Lower East Side, a group of Dominican-American musicians began blending merengue with techno, house and hip-hop. The result —merengue house, or merenhouse— reached the Billboard Latin Music Awards, the Grammys and Hollywood films: a New York scene, distinct from the Venezuelan one Roberto Antonio named around the very same years with a similar-sounding name.

Tecno merengue: the genre Venezuela danced to at every birthday party

It is not the same as New York's merengue house, even though the similar name confuses people: tecno merengue is Venezuelan, it was born inside the orchestra Los Melódicos, and it had Roberto Antonio as its king and Natusha as one of its great voices.

“El Meneíto” was far more than a party hit: in 1992 it dominated radio, television and stages across Latin America. Behind it was Natusha, a singer born in France who became Venezuelan on stage — and who, in 1997, left it all behind to become a journalist.

The word that made it into the dictionary

A young man from Caracas joined the prefix “mini” to the ending of “discoteca” to name what he had just invented. That word today has an entry of its own in the Diccionario de la lengua española, with two senses and the label “Ven.” — and it has been there longer than almost anyone remembers. It is not a charming detail: it is the hardest-to-erase recognition the movement has won.

When he died, a newspaper in Ciudad Bolívar did the fairest thing it could do: run again the interview it had made with him more than twelve years earlier, so that he would be heard in his own voice. Almost everything told here comes from it.

From Puerto Rico, a producer invented an idol-making machine in 1977: a group of teenagers that never grew old because it kept renewing itself. Menudo was the soundtrack of Latin American adolescence in the 80s —and the mold Ricky Martin came out of.

He was born south of Gran Buenos Aires, grew up singing in a church choir in Maracaibo and from there, with the Rodven label, turned the romantic ballad into the slow sound that embraced every miniteca of the eighties.

1977–1979: the three years the whole world danced

In the final three years of the seventies, dance music stopped being a matter of New York clubs and became the common language of a generation. It was the soundtrack that crossed the sea and lit up the dance floors of Latin America as well — not by chance, but through a very concrete chain: the record that was winning on Billboard was imported on vinyl and the radio played it over and over until the miniteca made it its own.

La Generación Halley

In 1986, while Halley's Comet crossed the sky, a Venezuelan film portrayed the young people who grew up among guerras de minitecas, breakdancing and the rise of pop. Its soundtrack is, still today, the map of that era.

A miniteca could impress with its columns of speakers, its lights, its booth, its effects and that giant name identifying the rig from the far end of the dance floor. But behind the spectacle there was another part, less visible and absolutely indispensable: the power amplifiers. In that world, one name ended up becoming the reference: Peavey.
