Radio Satélite 1430 AM

The Anglo-Saxon sound

What set it apart was the music. Satélite programmed by an Anglo-Saxon criterion: the North American repertoire predominated, and Venezuelan music was practically only heard in the six o'clock morning opening. In a part of the country where the dial was dominated by traditional programming, that bet turned it into the reference signal for the young ear — the same repertoire that was playing on the minitecas' dance floors.

Who was behind it

The station belonged to the Degwitz brothers, also owners of La Voz de Carabobo in Valencia. Among its directors are Salvador Frattalone and Samuel Hidalgo Futrillé, who are credited with having made the motto of the two capitals famous.

Radio Satélite is still on the air from the same building that bears its name, on calle Jacinto Lara in Guacara, between Ricaurte and Girardot, today affiliated with the Unión Radio network and with the Cámara Venezolana de la Industria de la Radiodifusión.

Date discrepancy

The sources consulted do not agree on the year it started: one places it being born in 1973 in Guacara, and another dates the start of its broadcasts on 1430 to 1975, under the ownership of the Degwitz brothers. Both are placed on record; they are not unified without a document.

What remains to be documented

What matters most to this Archive remains open: the concrete way in which Satélite supported the miniteca movement. Missing are the names of its announcers from those years, the shows devoted to the mixes or to the minitecas of the central region, and the sound clashes or events the station backed.
