Beginnings and concept

Speedway was born in 1976 in the Villa Colombia neighborhood of Puerto Ordaz, a seedbed of youth music projects. Its founder and owner, Argenis Malavé, chose the name after seeing a film in which the lead character fronted a band called “Speedway.” That inspiration marked the miniteca's sonic identity for good.

Under Malavé's direction, Speedway became a local landmark, with an authentic style that made it an essential part of the musical memory of Guayana.

Nine years of activity

The miniteca stayed active for nine years, between 1976 and 1985. In that period, Speedway played parties, neighborhood gatherings and social events, leaving an impact that is remembered today with nostalgia. Although it never reached the scale of other minitecas from the capital, its legacy rests on the mark it left on the music scene of Puerto Ordaz.

The “mueble” and its evolution

The first rig was built in Formica by a neighbor connected to the Maderama furniture shop. It was a cabinet that was far too big but surprisingly light, which set Speedway's initial look and functionality. Later, Malavé bought a second cabinet from a colleague known as “Vallito,” which allowed a leap in design and technical capacity.

That piece of furniture, together with lights, turntables and amplifiers, was the heart of the Speedway experience at its best.

The close of a chapter

In the mid-80s, Speedway came to its end. For its founder, letting go of the project was not easy, but it was inevitable. The rig was sold off and given away piece by piece, until it physically disappeared. The miniteca, however, was never erased from the collective memory: to this day it is remembered as one of the first legends of Villa Colombia.

A photographic memory

From that time there remain historic photographs featuring Aurelio Dos Santos, Guillermo Sánchez and Argenis Malavé himself, graphic testimony of an era in which Speedway made a difference on the Guayana scene.

Staff and associated voices

The project revolved mainly around its founder and a close circle of friends and collaborators who contributed to its technical and logistical development. Although it did not have as large a roster of discjockeys as other minitecas, Speedway stood apart for its personal, handmade character.
