A venue without precedent

Opened in March 1974, the Poliedro de Caracas was conceived as the definitive space for mass spectacles in Venezuela. Its imposing geodesic dome, designed by the architect Jimmy Alcock and based on the concepts of Buckminster Fuller, gave it a character unique in Latin America. With a capacity for more than 20,000 people, it quickly became an architectural and cultural icon.

Boxing bouts, fairs, international concerts, the Miss Venezuela and basketball games were held there; but, above all, it was remembered as the venue that legitimized the minitecas by carrying them from private parties to stages of world stature.

The Poliedro and cultura miniteka

At the end of the 1970s and through the 1980s, the minitecas found in the Poliedro a place where their aesthetic, technical and musical proposal reached unprecedented levels. The Guerras de Minitecas — the sound clashes of the movement — drew thousands of young people who packed the stands and the floor, living spectacles with sound, lighting and staging never before seen in the country.

The audience played a leading role: caravans from different cities traveled to Caracas to accompany their favorites. With each staging, a cultural movement was consolidated that defined the musical identity of a whole generation.

The first competitions

In a few months, between 1979 and 1980, the Poliedro was the setting for three Guerras de Minitecas and one Explosión de Minitecas, marking the beginning of a golden era. These dates marked the consolidation of the Poliedro as the great temple of the minitequero movement: each performance not only crowned the winning crews but drove the technical and artistic evolution of the spectacle.

· February 15, 1980 — Winner: Xenon.
· July 18, 1980 — Explosión de Minitecas, winner: Betelgeuse.

Legacy

The Poliedro de Caracas was not only a stage: it was the confirmation that cultura miniteka had a legitimate place in the musical memory of Venezuela. From the first guerras to the Explosión de Minitecas, its history is tied to the emergence and consolidation of a movement that transcended generations.

Today, its name remains a synonym for grandeur and for the spectacles that defined an unforgettable era.
