The Saturday Discotheque on Canal 8

The VTV (Canal 8) show that carried disco fever to the screen and recorded part of the Primera Guerra de Minitecas del Poliedro in 1979.

Disco fever reaches television

At the end of the 1970s, with disco music at its peak, VTV (Canal 8) put on the air a slot that turned Saturday into a televised discotheque. The show —remembered as Disco Fiebre and broadcast under the title “Fiebre en el 8”— went on the air in November 1978 in the Saturday slot and became a youth phenomenon.

Getting into the show was, according to accounts from the period, almost an odyssey: there were huge lines from midday on, above all when dance competitions between schools were announced. For many young people, attending was the same as spending two hours inside a real discotheque, but in front of the cameras.

Hosting and format

The slot was born at the hands of figures closely tied to Venezuelan disco sound:

· Santiago “Santy” Aurteneche — a singer and actor of Cuban origin, he was among the show's first hosts.
· Gustavo Pierral — a hugely popular announcer and promoter of disco sound in the country, he joined the hosting team and remained closely associated with Disco Fiebre's most successful period.

The ballet and “Descarga Dancer”

The format combined disco music, hosting and inter-school dance competitions, with a dance-floor energy that sought to replicate the atmosphere of the discotheques on screen. The show reached high ratings, to the point that international figures of the genre passed through its set.

Disco Fiebre had a dance troupe of its own, a ballet that was part of the television spectacle. That staging element also left the studio floor: the magazine records that, as part of the Primera Guerra de Minitecas del Poliedro de Caracas (July 1, 1979), the group “Descarga Dancer,” directed by Tony Saturno and tied to the show, performed.

An ally that recorded miniteca history

Disco Fiebre's most cited contribution to the memory of the minitecas is documentary: part of the Primera Guerra de Minitecas del Poliedro —held on July 1, 1979— was recorded and presented by Disco Fiebre, of Canal 8. Thanks to that television record, one of the movement's founding milestones was kept beyond oral memory.

As disco fever cooled at the start of the 80s, the slot lost strength and disappeared; in its place came other formats that no longer revolved around dance-floor music.

Note on the name of the channel and of the show

Canal 8 is also identified in period sources by its earlier name, Cadena Venezolana de Televisión (CVTV), and the show is documented under the on-screen title “Fiebre en el 8,” as well as “Disco Fiebre.” “VTV (Canal 8)” and the name “Disco Fiebre” from the magazine are kept, and the alternate title is placed on record.
