What is on record

The Flower was one of the fashionable discotheques of the Caracas of the late seventies. That is how the discjockey (now DJ) Oscar Hernández remembers it, having worked his way through that circuit booth by booth.

In 1976 it was operating on the Plaza de La Castellana, so it was already open in the middle of the decade, before the period of peak the magazine attributes to it. Still missing is a document —a registry entry, a press advertisement, an exact address— to fix the fact precisely.

Those same external sources indicate that the space later operated as a home for electronic music in the 1990s. That “same room in different periods” continuity comes from nostalgia blogs, not from a documentary source; it is cited as a lead, not as settled fact.

The daisy on the vest

The only known photograph of The Flower does not portray the dance floor but the bar, and that is why it says more than it seems. Four waiters pose behind the counter in the house uniform: a dark blue vest with a large yellow daisy embroidered on the front — the name of the venue turned into a garment. One wears a red kerchief at his neck; another is answering the rotary telephone.

On the bar is the rest of the period portrait: the bottles lined up, the key-operated cash register, the ashtrays, an ice bucket. In the background, the décor of the room —vertical stripes of color and a large golden circle with a plant motif— places the room squarely in the aesthetic of the seventies. It is a photograph of work, not of a party: those who made the night run, before the public arrived.
