An archetypal hidden figure

Mauricio Cutri was the owner of Super Efectos, the company that built, sold and rented mechanical lights to any miniteca that needed them. At a time when lighting was an inseparable part of the show —double balls, double worms, spiders, sweepers, cubes, strobes—, Cutri was on the invisible side of the business: the one who supplied the light so that others could shine on stage.

His name appears in the crews' own testimonies as the resource turned to when an effect was missing. He is, in that sense, an archetypal hidden figure of the technical force: without being seen on stage, he lit a good part of the Venezuelan miniteca movement of the seventies and eighties.

Building, selling, renting

Super Efectos operated as a full-service supplier of mechanical lighting: it did not only rent equipment for a night, it also built it and sold it to the minitecas that preferred to own their lights. That triple role —workshop, store and rental house— made the company a common point of support for crews of all sizes.

Two testimonies collected by La Revista de las Minitecas place him in that role. The miniteca Fahrenheit cites him as the supplier it turned to for what it did not have; and the miniteca Hot Way describes Super Efectos as a source of “first-class mechanical lighting.”

Legacy

In a movement that tended to remember the discjockeys and the sound brands, mechanical lighting was for years the silent work that gave the show its body. Behind that layer of light there stood, for many crews, the same address: Super Efectos and its owner, Mauricio Cutri.

His work is documented so far mainly by the testimonies of the minitecas that were his customers. Verifiable data are missing on the company's years of operation, its workshop and the rest of its clientele.
