A Colombian miniteca from Cúcuta (Norte de Santander) founded by Pedro Neira. Born as “Efectus” in 1983 and renamed Macro Efectus in 1986, it grew up on the Colombian-Venezuelan border drinking in the style of the Venezuelan minitecas, and took its show to Venezuela, Panama and Ecuador.

A Colombian miniteca with Venezuelan roots

Macro Efectus is a miniteca from Cúcuta, capital of the Colombian department of Norte de Santander, right on the border with Venezuela. We include it in the Archive because of its direct link with the Venezuelan scene: its founder bought his first equipment on the other side of the border line, took Venezuelan minitecas as his reference and over the years brought his show all the way to Venezuela. It is a window onto how miniteca culture crossed the border and turned regional.

Pedro Neira, the founder

Behind Macro Efectus is Pedro Neira, born in Bogotá in June 1964 and settled in Cúcuta since 1979. He discovered his passion for dancing at 14 and, at around 17 (1982), entered the world of the minitecas. His first work opportunity was as a discjockey at the discotheque La Media Naranja; his first mixer was stolen barely two weeks after he bought it.

From “Efectus” to “Macro Efectus”

On January 27, 1983 he bought new equipment in installments in San Antonio del Táchira, on the Venezuelan side of the border, and christened his project “Efectus” — a name inspired by sound effects and by the Juventus team. The brand grew in stages: first it came to be called “Súper Efectus”, inspired by the Venezuelan miniteca Fuma Chin, and in 1986, after witnessing a performance by the Venezuelan Infierno at the Club Tenis, it took on the definitive name Macro Efectus. The miniteca itself places that birth on September 5, 1986.

From that evolution one mark of identity remained: the shows were organized on three levels according to the scale of the event — Efectus, Súper Efectus and Macro Efectus.

Guerras de minitecas and tours

On the border scene, Macro Efectus was one of the spearheads alongside its great rival, Stereos 1090; their confrontations — the celebrated guerras de minitecas, the sound clashes of the movement, documented in period recordings such as the one from 1987 — drew thousands of followers. Between 1990 and 2003 the show toured Panama, Ecuador and Venezuela, as well as Colombian cities such as Bogotá, Tunja, Medellín and Bucaramanga.

Still going

In 2013 Pedro Neira reinvented the brand with the “Fiesta Retro” at the Club Cazadores, leaning on the nostalgia of the eighties; the project is still active with retro parties to this day. On the team he is joined by the producers Fernando Villamizar and Orlando Guerrero, and by his wife Milena Carvajalino.
