The venue

The Domo Bolivariano is one of the emblematic sports facilities of Barquisimeto, in Lara state. It was built between 1981 and 1982 from a structural project tied to the IX Juegos Bolivarianos of 1981 and opened on May 28, 1982. Its vaulted roof gives it the silhouette that earned it the popular name of “el Domo”.

With a capacity close to 10,000 spectators, it stands on the avenida Libertador, between calles 36 and 37. Throughout its history it has hosted basketball, volleyball, boxing and handball —it is the home of the professional team Guaros de Lara— as well as concerts and great spectacles. It was declared a historic monument and has been the object of recent refurbishments (2022).

Its place in Cultura Miniteka

The magazine mentions it as one of the icons of the minitequero world within its section of tributes to the stages of the interior of the country. For the miniteca circuit of the center-west, the Domo stood as a large-format venue equivalent to what the Poliedro meant for Caracas.

The first graphic evidence is in: a period photograph shows the miniteca Sandy Lane set up on the floor of the Domo, with its lettered booth on a red-skirted stage, the crowd gathered in a semicircle around it and its banner hung high on the empty stands. The image confirms that the great crews of the capital came down to Barquisimeto to play at this venue — Sandy Lane, the one of the boys of the Colegio San Ignacio, has an entry of its own in this Archive.

What is still missing is the detail: the date of that performance, whether it formed part of a guerra — one of the sound clashes of the movement — or of an event of its own, which other minitecas shared the bill and who organized it. That remains pending testimony and archive material. Events and results are not invented.
