A classroom at the San Ignacio

Diego Manuel Rodríguez A. co-founded Sandy Lane together with Carlos Bóveda Z. in a classroom of the Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola in Caracas, when both were in their first year of secondary school. What started out as a game between teenagers grew until it became, between 1979 and 1986, the most prominent group of minitecas in Venezuela.

His classmates Jorge Andrés Neher A. and José Manuel Gómez F. joined at once, and later other schoolmates such as José Antonio Maldonado B. and Ramón A. Mantellini B. The sound, the music, the mixing, the booth cabinetry, the lighting and the image they developed at the start of the eighties became a byword for innovation and originality in the miniteca world.

The lights and the rock

When the group divided up the roles, his was twofold: to handle the lighting systems —with the utmost skill, say his companions— and to act as substitute discjockey (now DJ).

But his mark was not a technical one. It was he who pushed until rock made it into the main repertoire of the miniteca's musical selection. According to the members of Sandy Lane themselves, that turn ended up imitated by every other miniteca in the country.

The hidden figure behind the name

Sandy Lane was a collective brand of students. Diego Rodríguez is one of the founding figures behind that name: the co-founder who, as a teenager, helped raise a crew that played hundreds of events —from fifteenth-birthday parties to shows at the Poliedro de Caracas— all over the country.
