Gypsy

The rest portrays the craft: the members in suit and tie at a formal party, the discjockey in shirtsleeves during the setup, the room with wicker furniture and the booth rigged against the wall. There are no stages and no walls of speakers: Gypsy belongs to the stage in which the miniteca was, literally, a small discotheque taken into a house.

1979, according to the press of the time

The report “Las minitecas que dan la nota”, by Patricia Poleo, places Gypsy's start in 1979: a group of young people who decide to put together the money and the equipment needed so that the music would not stop all night long at a party. And it adds the weight its name carried back then: “whoever had Gypsy take part in their party had its success guaranteed”. The compilation on the history of the minitecas edited by Retro Manía Lara tells the same story and supplies the why: a good part of the young could not get into the fashionable discotheques of those years — City Hall, Water Point, Estudio 84, La Lechuga, The Flower, the Crazy — and the way out was to set up the discotheque at home.

Both accounts also describe it as the miniteca that “sets the standard for the formation of all the rest”. That sentence is worth placing alongside the rest of the documented record: Los Muertos Andantes, of Víctor Morín, dates from January 1967, and Betelgeuse was founded in 1977 — both earlier. What those reports portrayed was the moment when the phenomenon became massive and visible in Caracas, not its starting point. That Gypsy was decisive for the generation that came after is what both sources maintain; that it was the first is maintained by no chronology.

About the name: the lettering on the cabinet itself says GYPSY, and that is the spelling this Archive keeps. The accounts write it “Gipsy” and “Gypsi”.
