Víctor Morín

Two distinct milestones of the same story should not be confused: Morín coined the term in 1967 with his crew; the official recognition of the word in the Dictionary of the Real Academia Española came much later and was pursued by the Miniteca New York New York. They are two moments separated by decades.

The trajectory

The Nueva Esparta press covered the group on its 44th anniversary, and that piece leaves a record of the road traveled: Morín, as discjockey (now DJ) and creator of the crew, gathered awards at the national level, toured much of the country and took his music to Brazil and Colombia. Los Muertos Andantes took part in guerras de minitecas —the sound clashes of the movement—, including the Poliedro de Caracas, representing Nueva Esparta state, with a watchword the piece itself records: they never regarded the other minitecas as rivals; the intention was to take part and to put on a good show.

The visual signature was also set down: the crew's cabinet was one of a kind —a coffin—, faithful to the name and remembered by everyone who saw it play.

What came afterwards

Los Muertos Andantes are still playing: the group keeps up its activity on Isla de Margarita and in special appearances around the country. Together with La Caravana, they are recognized as the pioneers who opened the road that Betelgeuse, Infierno, Sandy Lane, ZC and Tridimensión would later travel.

There is an open debate about that primacy which the MiniTK Archive records without closing it: some hold that La Caravana rolled before Los Muertos Andantes, and to this day there is no documentary source that establishes with certainty which came first. What no version disputes is who gave it the name.
