El Monstruo de la Cabina

The miniteca that was born from a homemade cabinet in Ciudad Bolívar and ended up reigning over the discjockey (now DJ) battles of the southeast.

A refrigerator and a Malibu

The story of The Fashion came out of the González brothers —Dennys and Deylor— in Ciudad Bolívar. Back around 1986, the boys took apart one of those pick-ups boxed into wood until they had turned it into a kind of cabinet, and the idea took shape with the visit of some friends from Los Teques, the Curra brothers (Alfredo and Ernesto). Other boys joined the group and put in their work, though the sole partner, owner and director —the one who put up the money— was Mrs. Flor María Salazar, mother of Dennys and Deylor.

The first formal gig came in 1987, on a December 24, at the wedding of a friend of the founders; the miniteca was called The Fashion High Stereo then. The rig was purely homemade: a cabaret bin put together by the boys themselves that looked more like a refrigerator, borrowed speakers, semiprofessional turntables and a borrowed mixer. Transport was Mrs. Flor's famous Malibu.

Deylor González, the monster of the booth

Out of that homemade cabinet came the best discjockey in the region in a long time: Deylor González. In an area with notable discjockeys, he had the creativity, the skill, the speed and the improvising ability needed on two, three and four turntables to be, simply, the best. In his first guerra de discjockeys, at the Club de Comercio in Ciudad Bolívar, with only two semiprofessional turntables and against rivals who already had Technics MkII 1200s, he came in Second Place. From his tours one unforgettable story remains, in Santa Elena de Uairén: at a sound clash with Brazilian discjockeys, the draw had him mixing first, and after seeing him nobody else wanted to go on stage: they considered him a monster.

The Fashion Discplay and the final curtain

In time, The Fashion came to be called The Fashion Discplay and turned into the favorite of the city's sifrinos and sifrinas. It took part in numerous sound clashes, sharing the stage with Hot Way, Scooby Doo, Roseland, Sono Power and Night People, among others, and measured itself against out-of-town minitecas such as La Máquina from Valencia and the “Triple Triunfadora del Poliedro,” Infierno, which it went on to beat in a guerra de DJs. Between 1997 and 2000 it assembled one of the best professional rigs in Ciudad Bolívar, its finest hour. In December 2000 it was brought to an end: it was a December 24 —the same date as its first gig, thirteen years earlier— with one last event in Ciudad Piar.
