The beach festival that turned Margarita into the capital of the rumba in the 90s.

The origin

In the mid-90s, the Isla de Margarita witnessed a cultural phenomenon that defined a generation: Descarga Belmont. Its first edition was held at the Hotel Lagunamar, with paid admission and a private format. The success was so resounding that the following year the cigarette brand Belmont (Bigott) decided to take the event to another level: a massive, free festival at Playa El Agua. That is where what many called the Venezuelan “Spring Break” was born.

Impact and expansion

For almost a decade, Holy Week in Margarita was marked by the Descarga Belmont. The island became an obligatory destination for young people from all over Venezuela and for international tourists looking for a spectacle unique of its kind. What it offered combined live music, legendary minitecas, DJs, hosting and the Caribbean sea as a backdrop.

The scale of the event inspired other brands to create similar festivals —Bacardi, Chiclets Adam's, Tequila Cuervo— and years later Polar with IceLand, though none of them reached the same cultural force as Belmont.

Artists and protagonists

The Descarga Belmont brought together national and international artists of great weight: Amigos Invisibles, Los Pericos, Desorden Público, King Changó, Guaco, Caramelos de Cianuro, Auténticos Decadentes, Zapato 3, Juanes, La Mosca, Negrito Man, Los Rabanes, Fauna Crepuscular, El Ghetto, Luis Enrique Alfa y Omega, Los Paranoias, Di Real Shaggy, among others.

Alongside them, minitecas such as New York New York shone on stage as part of the official production, sound and hosting in several editions. Their presence together with other legends of the movement helped consolidate the impact of the rumba across the whole country.

Hosting and voices

The festival had front-line voices and hosts. Among them Érika de la Vega stood out, hosting several editions, along with well-known DJs such as Gabriel Galdo, Franko Ossorio and Víctor San. Their work made every edition not just a concert but a complete spectacle of music and entertainment.

Legacy

More than two decades later, the Descarga Belmont is still remembered as one of the biggest and most influential events of youth culture in Venezuela. For many it was the first experience of a massive beach festival, and its memory still stirs nostalgia today. Without a doubt, it left an indelible legacy in the history of the country's iconic rumbas.
