Patinata de la Tricentenaria

Lechería's January 1, to the sound of Budgie

Every first of January, the Urbanización Tricentenaria opened the year with a popular patinata — a street party on roller skates — livened up by the miniteca Budgie; in time the event moved to a square in Lechería.

The rumba that opened the year

In the eighties, the Urbanización Tricentenaria (Barcelona / Lechería, Anzoátegui state) held its popular patinata every first of January: a day of skates, street and dancing with which the community opened the year. The soundtrack was the business of the miniteca Budgie, an emblematic crew of eastern Venezuela. Over the years, the patinata moved to one of the squares of Lechería, where Budgie went on putting up the music.

The miniteca of the patinata: Budgie

Budgie was born in Barcelona, Anzoátegui, in the late seventies, under the direction of “el turco Natalio” (Natalio), and lived its heyday in the eighties. Remembered discjockeys (now DJs) passed through its booth: Luis Bolívar, Lalo, Tony Graffe, Curry and Johnny Moubayed —oral memory calls this last one “el emperador de la mezcla,” the emperor of the mix—. The magazine and the eastern chronicle link it directly to the patinata of the Tricentenaria as its fixed New Year host. Budgie has an entity of its own as a miniteca; this entry documents the event, not the crew's full biography.
