From sixteen to the booth

Nery Jones Bethermy Rivas, from 23 de Enero in Caracas, started mixing at sixteen years old at the miniteca Yessty. From there he strung booths together around the Caracas circuit: the minitecas Feizer, Platinum, Fórmula Explosiva, Átomo Discplay and Máxima Discplay, and the clubs Kaoma, Sala Show and Can Can Music Hall.

The stint at ZC

By his own account, he reached Miniteca ZC “La del Control Total” by winning the resident post in a contest against nineteen discjockeys (now DJs), and with it he toured the country. He places that stage between 1999 and 2000.

The roster ZC itself publishes includes him among the discjockeys of its second stage, the one of the 90s under the ownership of Rómulo Montero Yamin, and spells him “Neri Jhon.” The two versions do not agree on the dates: the Archive's stays open until documentation appears to settle it.

His own rig

He ended up doing what the miniteca owners of the previous generation had done: building his own. His cabinet is lettered “NERY JONES DISC-PLAY,” with his name turned into a brand.

It is the full arc of the trade: from the kid who walks into somebody else's booth to the discjockey who builds and hauls his own.

Salsa as his ground

His logo carries two congas, and the circuit he moves in —Can Can Music Hall, Rumberos in Chacaíto, Status in Sabana Grande, Los Andes Club Latino— is that of the salsa and the Latin music of Caracas. That is where he is known.

What is still to be documented

There is no record of his date of birth, of the exact years at each miniteca before ZC, or of the specific events of that national tour. Nor is the discrepancy of dates about his stage at ZC resolved.
