Upata, the mid-eighties

Vladimir Medina is one of the three founders of the Miniteca Metamorfosis, born in the mid-1980s in Upata, Bolívar State, together with Hubert Campos and Celso Fernández. He was not only an owner: he also appears on the crew's list of discjockeys, alongside Richard Marchán, John Carlos “El Indio”, José Campero Toton, José Gregorio “El Mocho Goyo”, Fernando Corrales and Celso Fernández himself.

Metamorfosis worked less as a business than as a school: several discjockeys from Upata and from the region acknowledge having learned there. That detail explains a good deal of what came afterward — anyone who has passed through a miniteca that taught ends up, sooner or later, wanting to put on record what he learned.

The magazine that became a source

His second contribution does not sound: it is read. Medina compiled and edited “La Revista de las Minitecas”, the document that brings together the histories of dozens of Venezuelan minitecas of the eighties and nineties with their discjockeys, their equipment and their sound clashes. The cover identifies him without any fuss: “Dj Vladimir Medina — www.minitequeros.com.ve”.

He did not confine himself to compiling what others sent him: there are reports he signs himself, such as the one devoted to the Miniteca Infierno and to Tony Méndez, signed off “Reportaje. Medina Vladimir”. The compilation has circulated for years in document repositories under the title “Minitecas de los 80 y 90 y sus DJ”, which is how many people came to know it before they knew who had put it together.

For this Archive that magazine is not one more source. It is the one that underpins, wholly or in part, dozens of the entries that can be read today on CulturaMiniteka: every time a story appears credited to “La Revista de las Minitecas (DJ Vladimir Medina)”, behind it there is a minitequero from Upata who sat down to write what nobody was writing. Documenting the movement was, also, a way of going on sounding.

The other trace he left is a web address. The magazine points to www.minitequeros.com.ve, the portal from which he brought the miniteca community together, and in one of the photographs in this entry he is wearing it: the black shirt he has on at the decks prints “DJ. WLADIMIR” across the chest and, below it, the orange logo of minitequeros.com.ve. That spelling with a W is the one he himself uses in his personal brand, while the magazine signs him with a V.

Behind the decks, today

The photographs accompanying this entry are recent and are declared as such: in them he can be seen with the Technics turntables mounted in flight cases, a Denon mixer, the plastic crates full of vinyl and, in the background, the Caribbean Discplay banner. In one he raises a record on the Atlantic label like someone showing a credential; in another he mixes amid the smoke, beneath the cocktail lights and the bar of light bulbs that anyone who danced in the eighties recognizes at once.

What is still not on record is his personal chronology: in what year he began to play, when the magazine was published, how long the portal stayed online and what he does today with the equipment. If you have photographs of Metamorfosis in action or details of that career, they are the ones that would finish this entry.
