Tony Méndez conceived Infierno in Valencia in 1978 with a very clear idea: a faster show, darker in concept and with a sonic identity of its own. And he did not stop at ownership: in the booth, his style of fast mixing —very different from that of the minitecas that let the record run— was one of the marks that set Infierno apart when it reached the big stages.

In time the name settled as “Infierno by Tony Méndez,” to put its creator on record. The miniteca has an entry of its own in the Minitecas: Mobile Power portfolio of this Archive, with its full history.

The christening of the Cerebro Diabólico

Infierno needed a voice as powerful as its name, and Méndez went from station to station until he found Waldemaro Martínez at Éxitos 1090. Out of that recording —a burst of laughter that Méndez kept from being erased— came the “risa del diablo” that identified the miniteca at parties and clubs all over Venezuela. And out of that meeting came his alias as well: it was Waldemaro himself who christened him “El Cerebro Diabólico.”

The tips that introduced him stayed in the movement's memory: “I, Tony Méndez, prince of darkness, will take control of your minds to turn them into musical lust.”

The Poliedro, by acclamation

His connection with Charly Bóveda, of Sandy Lane, took Infierno to the Poliedro de Caracas. On one of those nights, Waldemaro Martínez asked the audience which miniteca they had liked best, and the answer was unanimous: “¡Infierno!”. Hence the slogan “La triple triunfadora del Poliedro” — and the precision that Méndez himself maintains: a winner by the acclamation of the audience, not the winner of a prize-giving.

The Mara de Oro

Formal recognition did come, and with solemnity: Miniteca Infierno received the Mara de Oro, the award of the plaque with the effigy among laurels, and it was Méndez who lifted it on behalf of his house. The exact year it was presented is under verification.

The operation had premises to match the name: the miniteca's business card printed “Infierno by Tony Méndez,” with premises of its own at the C.C. Caribbean Plaza in Valencia and two contact telephone numbers.
