Carlos Eduardo Ball, better known as Charlie Ball, was born on March 17, 1951 in Maracaibo, Zulia state. He was a professional of announcing with a unique style, impeccable diction and perfect English pronunciation, attributes that made him a required point of reference in Venezuelan broadcasting.

His sudden death, on November 29, 2020 in Caracas, from a massive heart attack at the age of 69, left a deep void in the world of radio and hosting. With him went a voice that had accompanied several generations of listeners, viewers and music lovers.

A career on radio

Charlie Ball began his career in his home city, working at Radio Mara in Maracaibo on the well-remembered slot Mermelada 71. He later moved to Caracas, where he built his career at Unión Radio, Éxitos 1090 and Hits 100 (today Éxitos 99.9 FM). There he hosted programs such as Mañana de Éxitos and the legendary Charlie Ball Show, in which he told stories about bands, artists and Hollywood stars with an elegant, well-documented style that won over thousands of listeners.

Television and commercials

At Venevisión, Charlie was the institutional voice for almost three decades, standing out as master of ceremonies on La Estrella de la Fortuna and also taking part in El Informador. Between 1969 and 1993 he recorded promos for the channel, and in 1995 he also lent his voice to the signal of Venezolana de Televisión. His versatility took him into dubbing and into the world of advertising, where he became the emblematic voice of well-known commercial brands.

Guerras de minitecas and urban culture

During the 80s and 90s, Charlie Ball also left his mark on the miniteca movement. At the famous Guerras de Minitecas — the sound clashes of the movement — his voice faced off in epic duels with that of Waldemaro Martínez, creating an unforgettable atmosphere that accompanied Sandy Lane, Betelgeuse and many others. His personal stamp was recognizable in iconic lines such as “Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen,” “Left, Right, Computer Compulser” and “Production,” expressions that became part of the DNA of Venezuelan nightlife culture.

Legacy and farewell

Charlie Ball's death was mourned by colleagues, journalists and artists such as Luis Carlos Díaz, Mari Montes, Héctor Manrique, Dereck Blanco, Mariela Celis, Efraín Zavarce, Alonso Moleiro, Manuel Ángel Redondo and Manuel Silva, among many others. All of them recognized in him a master of radio and a voice that defined an era.

His legacy remains in every recording, in every performance, in the radio he helped make great and in the memory of those who grew up listening to him. Today, alongside other giants such as Iván Loscher and Penzini Fleury, he is remembered as part of that pantheon of sound that defined Venezuela.
