In search of the sound of New Way

What is on record

New Way appears on the Caracas side of the bill of the “Doble Estallido de Minitecas,” held at El Poliedro de Caracas in the International Youth Year (1985) and organized by the Sindicato de Radio y TV and the Secretaría General of the F.C.U. That poster — a primary source of the CMTK Archive — confirms that New Way existed and competed as a Caracas miniteca in 1985.

Its graphic identity survives in the logo at the head of this entry: the name drawn in overlapping red ribbons — the vanishing-point lettering so characteristic of miniteca graphics — and, at the foot, the motto it advertised itself with: “Sonido con personalidad.”

Its trace in “La Generación Halley” (1986)

New Way also appears in the memory of the film “La Generación Halley,” the feature by Thaelman Urgellés that in 1986 portrayed Venezuelan youth and was one of the great box-office successes of the country's cinema. Accounts from the miniteca community mention it among the minitecas seen in the party and dance scenes of the film, alongside Sandy Lane, Betelgeuse, Fahrenheit and The Drop — which in the film appears as “The Trop.”

Those same accounts associate the film's identity with a miniteca called “Halley Generation,” the sound system from which the film is said to have taken its name.

Note: the list of minitecas that appear in the film comes from community sources (accounts, archives and fan records), not from the film's official credits. For New Way, the basic biographical details are still to be confirmed: owners, year of founding, discjockeys, sound and lighting gear, and its run within the circuit. No period photograph of its booth or its crew has been located either.
