Beginnings and concept
The Drop was born in 1982 in the east of Caracas, driven by Gustavo Tinoco, Javier Ovalles and Febres Cordero. From the start it had the work of DJ Carlos Tespio, remembered for the records “Dancing in The Drop” and “Dancing in The Drop Strikes Again.” Its slogan, which stayed with it through the 80s, was clear: “The Drop, la Miniteca de los Líderes.”
Its initial launch involved the producer Enzo Casella (then at Sonorodven), a figure associated with the record industry. That combination of technical rig, repertoire and art direction consolidated its identity.
The “Constelación de Orión”
In 1986, Johnny Cabrera, founder of Betelgeuse, folded The Drop into a bloc of emblematic minitecas (among them Sandy Lane and others), which he named the “Constelación de Orión.” The alliance raised the production standard and took its shows to mass venues.
