The Club Náutico Caroní is one of the emblematic social clubs of Puerto Ordaz, in Ciudad Guayana, Bolívar state. It stands on the avenida Guayana, across from the Hotel Intercontinental Guayana, on the banks of the Caroní river, and specializes in water sports: sailing, sport fishing and the river life that defines the city. Local accounts credit it with around half a century of history as a recreational club and family retreat, which places its origins in the 1970s —the same decade in which the miniteca movement was being born—. It remains active today.
Its place in Cultura Miniteka
The Club Náutico Caroní enters the Temples collection in its own right and by direct contribution to the Archive: it was the Guayana venue that was missing. Its best documented night in the MiniTK Archive is that of Miniteca Hot Music's historic weekend of 1984: after playing on the Friday at the Círculo Militar in Ciudad Bolívar, “La Number One” played on the Saturday night in the Gran Salón of the Club Náutico Caroní, where it took the recognition and the win over legendary minitecas such as Scooby Doo, Roseland, Hot Way and Saxón, with the remembered sets by Luis “Wicho” Yépez and Enrique Rojas.
