The Hotel Tamanaco is one of the great landmarks of Venezuelan hotel-keeping. It was opened in December 1953 in Caracas, on the hills of Las Mercedes, as part of the Plan Nacional de Hotelería promoted by the State to develop postwar tourism. The project came out of a contract signed in 1949 between the InterContinental Hotels division of Pan American World Airways and the Venezuelan Ministerio de Fomento.
The design is attributed to the architect John Wellborn Root Jr., of the firm Holabird, Root & Burgee, with the collaboration of the local architect Gustavo Guinand Van der Walle. The original hotel had some 400 rooms and very soon an extension of around 300 more was added. For decades it operated under the InterContinental brand. It still stands and is in operation as one of the emblematic hotels of the capital.
