The testimony

José Luis Rojas belongs to the “junior” generation of discjockeys of the 1980s and 90s: those who trained neither in academies nor in borrowed booths, but by watching. According to the direct testimony gathered by the CMTK Archive, he inherited his mixing techniques merely from attending the events of the Miniteca Hot Music, where he went alongside his brother Enrique Rojas.

That path of learning —the event as school— is one of the most repeated features of the cultura miniteca: the booth was the classroom, and the juniors absorbed the synchronization, the tone and the rhythm from the dance floor, waiting for their turn.

The crossing with the Archive: the booth he watched

What José Luis saw at those events is documented with an entry of its own in the MiniTK Archive. His brother Enrique Rojas —founder of the Miniteca Star Cruiser together with his brother Carlos Rojas and his brothers in life Carlos Luis Valenzuela and Carlos Simoza, and later lead discjockey of Infierno Sweet— was part of the alliance with Hot Music from 1984, where together with Luis “Wicho” Yépez he pulled off the feat of winning two guerras de minitecas —the sound clashes of the movement— in a single weekend using three simultaneous turntables. Enrique stepped away from the scene at the end of 1986; decades later he founded CulturaMiniteka.com and CMTK Radio.

Hot Music, “La Number One” of Guayana, was in those years the perfect school for a junior: the miniteca's entry records the sets by Yépez and Rojas —solo and as a duo— cheered by judges and crowd in the sound clashes of 1984. That is the repertoire of techniques which, according to the testimony, José Luis made his own from the audience.
