Beginnings and training

Carlos Luis Valenzuela, known on the music scene as DJ CLV, began his story at the end of the 70s in the Los Olivos neighborhood of Puerto Ordaz, Bolívar state, Venezuela. Barely 15 years old and in the company of his inseparable friends Enrique Rojas, Carlos Simoza and Carlos Rojas, he discovered his passion for music after they were removed from a party for being underage. That episode awakened in them the curiosity and the desire to create a miniteca of their own.

In 1977 they founded Star Cruiser with homemade equipment, playing at family parties and local events. With effort and creativity they raised funds to improve their sound, and in 1979 they made the professional leap with the creation of the iconic Miniteca Energía, known for its clean sound, its precise lighting and a high-level staging that made it one of the favorites of the Guayana public.

The Infierno Sweet period

In 1980 he joined, together with his whole crew, the legendary Infierno Sweet, led by José Gregorio Bello “Goyito.” There he shared the booth with Enrique Rojas, who debuted as lead discjockey, while Carlos Luis established himself as an expert in synchronization, tone and rhythm. Infierno Sweet took its first major victory at the Guerra de Minitecas —the sound clashes of the movement— of the Hermandad Gallega of Puerto Ordaz in 1983, marking the start of a period of triumphs and recognition.

The alliance with Hot Music

In 1984 he was part of the alliance with Hot Music, together with the full Infierno Sweet crew. That union transformed the scene in the east of the country, establishing Hot Music as one of the most imposing minitecas in Venezuela. That same year, alongside Luis “Wicho” Yépez and Enrique Rojas, they took two consecutive victories in a single weekend, surprising everyone with the simultaneous use of three turntables —a technique Carlos Luis had mastered from his earlier experience with four turntables at Infierno Sweet—.

In mid-1986, Carlos Luis retired from Hot Music along with his lifelong companions, closing a golden period in the history of the Venezuelan minitecas.

Legacy and the present

After retiring, he went on training new talent and founded the Miniteca Escalibur together with Asdrúbal Miyan and the brothers Luis and Francisco Aguirre, as well as collaborating in the creation of Miniteca Billboard with Macovicka. In 1989 he moved to Miami, Florida, where he graduated in Computer Science without leaving music entirely behind. Between 1999 and 2003 he worked as a guest DJ in iconic Miami clubs such as La Cobacha, Segundo Piso and Señor Frogs.

He now lives in Houston, Texas, where he combines his work as a Field Engineer with his passion for music. From his personal studio —a true temple of sound— he records sessions for radio stations and shares his art with friends and family. He is also one of the resident DJs of CMTK Radio, keeping alive the essence of the golden years of the miniteca movement.
