A life on the air in Guayana

José Luis Simoza built a long career on the radio of Puerto Ordaz. In the 80s he hosted “El Disco Show,” a program that took dance music and the pulse of the minitecas to the city's signal. His voice ended up associated with the movement as one of those that, from the booth, accompanied the golden age of mobile sound in Guayana.

The independent record of Guayana radio confirms him among the region's announcers: “Somos Radio Guayana” lists him within the body of voices of the area, tied to the Radio Cachamay house.

The hidden disc jockey

Behind the announcer lives a disc jockey. At the retro parties of Puerto Ordaz — the same circuit that gathers the protagonists of the Guayana sound — José Luis Simoza goes back to the decks for the love of it, with headphones and turntables, proving that the passion for mixing never left him.

His name reappears at the city's retro gatherings alongside other protagonists of the movement, such as José Luis Rojas and Víctor Carpio: a generation of voices and discjockeys (now DJs) that keeps the memory of the minitecas of Puerto Ordaz alive, gathering after gathering.

The miniteca streak runs in the family: his brother, the businessman Oscar Simoza, owned Club Regine in Puerto Ordaz — famous for its themed parties and its Sunday matinees with minitecas from the area — today documented with its own entry in the Legendary Discotheques collection of this Archive. Through that same branch he is related to Carlos Simoza, the live voice of the minitecas Energía, Infierno Sweet and Hot Music.
