1980: Tercera Guerra del Poliedro

The eight competitors rigged their booths on the same stage and performed in turn, so that the audience had them all in view at the same time. Each one arrived with its name turned into an emblem: Jungle in lit letters between the speaker towers, Oxígeno with the two “O”s resolved as globes, The Bunching lettered in cursive on the black front of the cabinet, Xenón in white blocks with the accent shaped like an apostrophe, Erotic Soul in colored letters, and Yumbo — Rubén Guevara's miniteca — with its name in the light box of a white two-piece console. At the end of the night, the trophy came to rest on the winner's sign.

The podium

Xenón took first place with José Lentini, José González and Gonzalo González on the turntables. Second went to White Point, with Arnaldo Verweij, and third to The Bunching, with Hermes Carreño and Hernán González.

For Xenón this was the crowning: the miniteca that in July 1979 had turned up with a borrowed cabinet was winning, eight months later, the sound clash that was looking for the best in the country. And second place says something about the moment the movement was living through: White Point came from Montalbán, a residential neighborhood in the southwest of Caracas with no nightlife circuit of its own, and its owner, Arnaldo Verweij, was also the one who mixed. That was enough to finish ahead of every miniteca in the country but one.

That was the cast of that night: alongside the ones already heard all over Caracas there competed neighborhood crews, such as White Point, or crews with a short run, such as Yumbo, Rubén Guevara's miniteca. In a sound clash announced as national, merit did not depend on the size of the name but on the thirty minutes each one had to defend on stage.
