He built his own miniteca and mixed it himself. He took Yumbo to the Poliedro in February 1980, and his personal archive keeps two of the few documents that remain of how a guerra de minitecas —the sound clashes of the movement— was called.

Owner and discjockey

Rubén Guevara was the owner of Miniteca Yumbo and also the one who mixed in it. In the miniteca movement that double role was common: whoever put together the money for the rig ended up being the one who made it play, and the name of the miniteca and that of its owner became the same name.

His booth was a white two-piece console with “YUMBO” lettered on a light box across the front. In the scene he was known as “Pescuezo,” a nickname born at the club La Lechuga in Caracas.

The Poliedro, February 1980

Guevara took Yumbo to the Tercera Guerra del Poliedro, held at the Poliedro de Caracas on February 15, 1980 at 7:30 p.m., sponsored by Caracas 750 under the motto “Buscando la mejor miniteca de Venezuela” and with Oscar D'León and La Crítica on stage. It competed alongside Erotic Soul, White Point, Oxígeno, Jungle, Master West and Xenón.

The eight set up their booths on the same stage and performed in turn, with the audience watching them all at once. Xenón won, with White Point second and The Bunching third; there is no record of Yumbo reaching the podium. In a guerra billed as national, the merit did not depend on the size of the name but on the thirty minutes each one had to defend.

What he kept

The documentary value of his archive goes beyond his own miniteca. Guevara kept two pieces from the Comité Pro-Graduación of the Colegio San Agustín, the committee that organized the Primera Guerra de Minitecas of July 1979: the letter with which the committee summoned the minitecas to a meeting, with the school's stamp and the six signatures of its members, and the numbered card —number 0538— with which its chairman, William Núñez Alarcón, notified the performance slot by hand: “Arrancas con el 1er lugar. Suerte…”.

They are among the few documents that survive of how a guerra de minitecas was called and put in order before the format became a large-scale spectacle.

The craft, carried on

Guevara did not stay behind in that decade. He carried on behind the console into the era of professional sound, with lighting rigs, effect balls and moving heads, and he turns up at the reunions of the movement's discjockeys (now DJs) alongside figures from other houses, such as Óscar Hernández and Salvatore Schiera, of Betelgeuse.
