From the catwalk to the booth

Patricia Carles was born in Caracas in the early 1970s. Before music, she already moved in another world: as a teenager she worked as a runway model for the women's fashion label Tropicana and for the jeans brand Levi's, and appeared in television commercials. (The facts about her beginnings come from a testimony of the miniteca community and are pending a second documentary source.)

1987: a woman on four decks

The turn came from the miniteca ZC “La del Control Total”. Pier Giampaolo Yunes —founder and owner of ZC, the mobile discotheque from the west of Caracas that broke technical and stage molds— decided to innovate by placing a girl in front of four Technics MK2 1200 turntables to control the company's music. That is how Patricia became known, at around 15 years old: the first woman discjockey in Venezuela.

The entry for Ángel Matt “El DJ del Control Total” in this same archive records that it was he who introduced her and pushed for her joining the ZC booth, in the miniteca's period of greatest splendor (low console, live sampler, multiple turntables), which toured Venezuela and the Caribbean.

The voice that was heard but not seen

Many heard her mix sets in the middle of the golden age of the minitecas, but few saw her face: for years Patricia was a name and a sound more than an image. That condition —a protagonist who was heard, not seen— is part of what makes her place in the story singular: she opened the booth to women in a trade then dominated by men.

Reinvention: from Caracas to Mount Shasta

Over the years, Patricia Carles completely reoriented her life. She lives today in Mount Shasta, California, where she carries out extensive work as a writer —a best-selling author—, a holistic therapist in biodecoding and human emotions, a communicator, a producer and a facilitator of retreats. She founded the Avalon center in Mount Shasta and runs her practice of support and conscious health.

Her motto sums up that second life: “There will be peace in the world when each person finds their own peace within themselves and we can all vibrate in the frequency of unconditional love.”
