In search of the sound of Alejandro Rhode

The starting fact

“La Revista de las Minitecas” (DJ Vladimir Medina edition) credits him with one concrete fact: the jingles of Banana Power Inc. were made by him in his early days in radio. In time, the miniteca's sound identity would pass to other voices — the magazine mentions later work by Enrique Hoffman — but the founding spots carried Rhode's voice when he was still coming up as an announcer.

The dance announcer of Radio Capital

Those beginnings have the name of a station: Radio Capital 710 AM, where Rhode settled from 1980 and where he hosted “Las Súper Noches,” the slot given over entirely to the Dance, Hi-NRG and Eurobeat that played on Friday nights, accompanied by the music programmer Sonia Adrián. That program — documented in the Allies On Air collection of this Archive — stayed on the air until 1989.

In 1988, when Éxitos 107.3 FM went on the air as one of the country's first commercial FM stations, Rhode was among its founding voices. There he carried on the same line with his dance mixshows: “Happy Rhode Hot Mix” — the “Hot Mix” that the radio memory of Caracas remembers — and, later, “Mix Factory.” It is the same music that played on the miniteca dance floors, moved to the dial.

His voice in Betelgeuse

Rhode's relationship with the minitecas does not end with Banana Power. Miniteca Betelgeuse counts him among the voices of its history and gathers his testimony from that period, in which he speaks of the house in the first person plural, as part of it. Betelgeuse operated between 1977 and 1997 and was one of the largest of the movement: it won the Guerra de Minitecas — a guerra de minitecas, the sound clashes of the movement — at the Poliedro de Caracas in July 1980.

What he underlines in that testimony is precisely the ground on which the minitecas really competed: equipment, music catalog, lights and cabinet. It is an announcer's view of the apparatus that held up the party.
