The minitecas' radio station invents its show

Caracas 750 Dinámica, “la Todopoderosa,” was the youth AM radio station that took its alliance with the miniteca movement furthest: it sponsored Betelgeuse, Sandy Lane and New York People, and it organized guerras de minitecas —the sound clashes of the movement— at the Poliedro de Caracas. In 1986 it turned that alliance into programming: “El Proyecto 750” was born.

The format

The show consisted of runs of 36 songs with no commercial interruptions, in three broadcasts a day during the vacation season, with the best continuous music mixed by the capital's most prominent minitecas: Empire, Sky Way, New York People, Betelgeuse, Sandy Lane and The Drop — three of them, Betelgeuse, Sandy Lane and The Drop, have an entry of their own in this Archive's Minitecas: Mobile Power portfolio. The minitecas' mixes —until then the preserve of the parties and the sound clashes— went out over the AM network for all of Caracas. Radio memory records Tinedo Guía —with an entry of his own in the Voices That Left a Mark collection— and Héctor Molina as the hosts of the show.

The advertisement: “nuevamente en el aire”

A press advertisement from the station announces the show's return —“en su radio… nuevamente en el aire… Proyecto 750”— and spells out the formula: “cada día, 5 maratones de 2 horas con más de 30 canciones continuas… además el sonido y las mezclas de las grandes minitecas de Caracas.” The piece closes with the station's signature, “Caracas 750 …la auténtica,” and presents itself as “un gran festival musical con lo mejor de todos los tiempos e invitados especiales.”

The advertisement draws the minitecas as billboards over the silhouette of the city: Betelgeuse, Sandy Lane and New York People can be read there, three of those already on the show's roster. The press of the day summed it up in one line: “Por temporada vacacional Caracas 750 brinda música de minitecas en tres emisiones diarias.”

That the advertisement speaks of a return confirms the show had more than one season, and that the figures changed between them: the record of radio memory describes three daily broadcasts of 36 songs, and this advertisement announces five daily two-hour marathons. No choice is made between the two: each corresponds to what its own source announces.

The show ran in the vacation season, and in Venezuela that season runs from July to mid-September. The long holidays of the school year were also the long nights of the minitecas, and the station programmed accordingly.

Article in progress…… The exact month of the premiere is missing: outside sources cite March and August of 1986, and the reference to the vacation season points to August —March would correspond to Semana Santa, which is not usually called that—, but the month is not settled without a document to fix it. Also missing are the date of the advertisement announcing its return, how many seasons it ran in total and whether there was a formal agreement with the minitecas behind it.
