Identity and purpose
Maui Discplay was born as an answer to the ferment of the minitecas that ruled Venezuelan youth in the eighties. According to Vladimir Medina's specialized magazine, the project was conceived by the young entrepreneur Arturo Gutiérrez around 1985, when it was not yet called a “discplay” but simply a “miniteca.” The name “Maui” alludes to the island in the Hawaiian archipelago, a symbol of beauty, ideal weather and supreme quality — which is what the brand wanted to reflect: “estar siempre en el primer lugar o sea la mejor de todas las minitecas.”
Maui's first documented public appearance took place in February 1985 in the Urbanización San Martín of Caracas, with a modest rig loaded with enthusiasm: Cabaret speakers, ElectroVoice mids, Gaus horns, spider lights, mirror balls, sweepers and other mechanical lights, according to Medina's chronicle. In time, the brand evolved toward a more advanced format, adopting the term “Discplay” to reflect its technical leap into professional lighting, screens, trusses and reinforced amplification.
