Twelve years old and a booth

Francisco Freites was born in Caracas. At the end of the 80s, inspired by his brother, he came to the discjockey (now DJ) trade and began to train. He started his career at twelve years of age, and the country's artistic world and mobile sound companies recognized him early on.

The nickname he is known by —“El Niño de Oro”— is born of that: of being a child doing a professional's job in a scene that did not forgive.

In the ZC booth

He was part of the second generation of discjockeys of Miniteca ZC “La del Control Total,” the stage running from 1990 to 1999 under the ownership of Rómulo Montero Yamin.

By then ZC was a brand already made: first place at the Complejo Naciones Unidas in Caracas, the Fraylejón de Oro of Mérida in 1986 with the awards for best discjockey, best lighting, best sound and best miniteca, and a reputation built on being a pioneer in sampler, pink-noise generator, white lighting and mixing with six turntables.

The Poliedro, television and the awards

He starred in the most important concerts at the Poliedro de Caracas and took part in television and radio programs.

He was nominated for the “Faylan de Oro” awards, where he obtained fourteen consecutive prizes across different editions.

From the miniteca to production

In the early 2000s he made the jump to electronic music alongside his brother, DJ Alexis Freites, and began his side as a producer with tracks that turned into hits in Venezuela.

He was also part of the group Chino & Nacho, working live with top-level musicians on national and international tours. He lives in Spain today and produces in genres such as afro house, latin tech, tech house, deep house and funky house.

The nickname, turned into a record

On October 13, 2002 he released “El Niño De Oro” on the Town House De Venezuela label. The nickname they had given him as a teenager in the miniteca booths ended up being the title of his own track, and it is still going around on the music distribution platforms.

It is an uncommon arc in the movement: most miniteca discjockeys of the 80s and 90s never got as far as signing productions of their own. His later catalog is published on Beatport, Spotify, Deezer and SoundCloud.

Why it matters to the Archive

His case documents a way out that the miniteca movement produced and that is rarely told: that of the booth discjockey who becomes a record producer and sustains a career outside the country.

The craft he learned in a Venezuelan miniteca of the 90s —reading the floor, chaining records, holding a whole night together— is the same one he produces with in Europe today. Between the one thing and the other there are three decades and an ocean, but there is no change of profession.

What is still to be documented

There is no record of the exact years of his time at ZC or at the other minitecas he worked in, of the specific events at the Poliedro where he performed, or of which television and radio programs had him on. Nor of his date of birth.
