The first “national” guerra de minitecas
On December 7, 1979, the Poliedro de Caracas hosted the second Guerra de Minitecas — the sound clashes of the movement — the first of them national in scope; Explosión was crowned, followed by Betelgeuse and Lechuga's People.
What is on record
Months after the Primera Guerra of July 1, the same stage hosted this second confrontation, presented now as the first of national scope. The victory went to Explosión — which in July had finished second — with Betelgeuse and Lechuga's People completing the podium.
The poster for the event announced it without frills: “Guerra de Minitecas Nacional,” lettered over a cone rising from a vinyl record in a starry sky, with the date — December 7 — and the Poliedro at the foot. The word that in July had appeared inside a longer title was now the entire title.
The photograph that opens this article is one of the few that portray what almost never gets photographed: the setup. The Poliedro appears with the red stands still empty, the crews assembling their booths at the far end of the floor, the cables laid across the ground, the mirror ball already hanging — and a white Volkswagen Beetle parked inside the ring, beside the freshly unloaded equipment. That is how the minitecas came into the venue: driving right onto the floor.
